Therapy Develops

While advice may solve a problem. Therapy develops the person

Many people come to therapy expecting the therapist to tell them what to do. But advice can quietly weaken the very change the client is  seeking.

When a decision comes from the therapist, the client’s autonomy is reduced — making follow-through more difficult.

Why advice can undermine growth:

When therapists give advice, they can unintentionally position themselves as the expert on the client’s life. This subtle shift in power can undermine the client’s autonomy by steering decisions toward the therapist’s values rather than the client’s. Over time, this dynamic may create dependency and weaken the client’s confidence in their own judgment and decision-making.

What therapy does instead:

Effective therapy strengthens the capacity to make choices rooted in personal values. It teaches clients how to think, not what to think — equipping them to navigate future challenges with independence.

In essence

Advice can address a problem in the moment. Therapy develops the person for the long term. When therapy works well, clients don’t need the therapist forever, they grow beyond the need.
